As an all-volunteer organization that is deeply connected in our local (and distal) communities, OPEN is guided by an evolving set of values. These values impact how we run the organization and how we interact with the community; the events we choose to organize, host, promote, or participate in; and the overall direction we seek to take the organization over the long term. If you have input concerning these values, we would love to hear from you! (Please email your thoughts to [email protected], or visit our contact page.)
For all OPEN-related events, we ask that all speakers and attendees hold these values in mind and abide by our Community Values in order to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all. We also ask that all community members let us know if they believe important values have been left out or could be framed in a more inclusive manner — we are striving to improve!
If you experience or witness unacceptable behavior, you are encouraged to report it to any of the council members present at the event. Please see the leadership page for their contact information. Alternatively, we have an anonymous reporting option (please see the Feedback & Anonymous Reporting form at the bottom of the contact page).
OPEN Community Values
OPEN strives to:
Serve the broader community in working toward social justice, equity, and decolonization through promoting conscious evaluation via training, practices, and collaboration. We engage in deep reflexivity, support the voices of historically (and currently) marginalized or oppressed groups, and aim to incorporate diverse experiences, knowledges, and ways of knowing.
In working toward serving our community in a conscious way, we value: patience and forgiveness, inclusivity and a welcoming spirit, consideration and respect, caution and kindness, and understanding across differences.
The following conduct guidelines are meant to support this broader value of serving our community in a conscious way:
We are patient and forgiving
Working toward inclusivity, openness, and social justice can take time. We will likely make mistakes along the way. We will assume that others have good intentions, we will work toward supporting the voices and perspectives of those who have been wronged, and we will aim to promptly correct mistakes and right any wrongs.
We are inclusive and welcoming
We foster a community that welcomes and supports people of all backgrounds and identities. This includes, but is not limited to, members of any race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, immigration status, social and economic class, educational level, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, size, family status, political belief, religion, and mental and physical ability.
We are considerate and respectful
We recognize that our work will be used by other people, and we in turn will depend on the work of others. We consider the consequences of our actions on other community members when making decisions.
We might all experience some frustration now and then, but we do not allow that frustration to turn into a poor behavior. We aim to ensure a healthy balance of comfort and discomfort to ensure productivity towards our aims.
We use caution and kindness in the words that we choose
We are a community of professionals, and we conduct ourselves professionally. We are kind to others. We do not insult or put down other participants. We do not tolerate harassment and other exclusionary behavior.
We work toward understanding across differences
We work to resolve disagreements and differing views constructively, and we aim to hold multiple truths and perspectives simultaneously. We hold in mind that we are different, and that the strength of our community comes from its diversity. We aim to learn from our mistakes.
