October 23 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Race and equity are being hotly discussed inside the field at large and recent events in Portland are pushing evaluators to navigate issues of race and equity in their work. This October, OPEN is excited to announce a series of conversations focused on equity in evaluation. This series is in response to feedback offered by OPEN members who attended our initial equity session later 2018 and welcoming to all regardless of professional role or point in the journey. Karyl Askew, and independent consultant, and Nelda Reyes of AB Cultural Drivers have extensive knowledge and experience in incorporating this work into their evaluation work and will lead the presentation. Joining them as facilitators are Kari Greene (InQuire Group, Program Design & Evaluation Services, OPEN) and Sam Mehoke (Development Matters, OPEN)

Our vision is to build a learning community of professionals who support each other to develop practices that advance socially just and equitable evaluations. This event will provide an opportunity for us to dive into the topic of culturally responsive evaluation. We’ll start off this conversation by briefly reviewing a list of best practices drawn from the culturally responsive evaluation literature (Askew, Beverly, Jay, 2014; Remen, 1999). Following we will assemble into small groups to get to know each other, operationalize key terms (towards a shared language), and explore what the concepts look like in practice, considering your current successes and challenges. Our collective reflections and identified needs, reported out at the end, will inform the focus of future conversations. We look forward to being in community with you!

We offer for your consideration two documents to read ahead of time if you have the opportunity. We will allow time in the session to go over them, as well.
