R is a remarkable software package capable of performing many different data-related tasks. This workshop is for evaluators and those in other professions who would like to begin using R or to continue using R beyond the first few steps.

Participants in the workshop will:

  1. Understand the value of using R,
  2. Gain familiarity with R and RStudio,
  3. Use R to perform fundamental data wrangling and analysis tasks, and
  4. Use R to perform fundamental data visualization tasks.
  5. Use R to perform fundamental document creation tasks.

Location
The workshop will be held on Tuesday, September 11 from 1:00pm-4:00pm at Centrl Office West End. Public parking is available at the SmartPark garage at 10th and Yamhill.

Cost
The workshop cost is $150 (far less than an SPSS license!). A 20% discount is available for Oregon Program Evaluation Network members. If you are an OPEN member, please email us to get the discount code to use on checkout.

Presenters
R for Eval is a co-production of Eric Einspruch and David Keyes. Two experienced evaluators based in Portland, they are both eager to share the power of R with others in the evaluation community.

Eric Einspruch is an independent researcher and evaluator who has conducted a wide variety of studies over more than three decades, including small-scale evaluations, large multi-site evaluations, large-scale surveys, and randomized controlled trials. He has written two books on the use of statistical analysis software, and in recent years has increasingly used R as his data analysis tool of choice. He also teaches graduate, undergraduate, and certificate courses in program evaluation, research methods, and analytic research methods.
David Keyes is an independent researcher and evaluator with particular expertise in the application of technology to research. After completing his PhD in anthropology, he taught at Lewis and Clark College before entering the world of evaluation. He worked on the research team at the Oregon Community Foundation before striking out on his own. Now, as a consultant, he works with organizations throughout the United States, using R to help them analyze and visualize their data in ways that lead to positive change.

Prerequisites
This workshop is for participants who are already familiar with (at least) the basics of data analysis, as we will focus on the use of R to accomplish analysis tasks rather than on learning the analysis tasks themselves. Participants will need to bring a laptop to the workshop that already has the current versions of R and RStudio on it (instructions to be provided).
